Planning a Vermont Ski Trip With a Cannabis Dispensary Visit

Planning a Vermont ski trip has become more complex since the state legalized adult-use cannabis sales in 2022. Many visitors now want to experience both Vermont’s legendary skiing and its legal cannabis market. At Juana’s Garden in Montpelier, I help ski tourists navigate this planning process every winter.

The most important thing I tell people planning a Vermont ski trip with a dispensary visit: these two activities must be completely separated. You ski during the day without any cannabis use whatsoever. Then, after you’re done skiing for the day and back at your accommodation, you can visit a cannabis retailer or use products but only if your lodging permits it and only if you won’t be driving afterward.

This isn’t just good advice. It’s Vermont law. Ski resorts prohibit cannabis on their property. Most ski lodges don’t allow cannabis use. And combining cannabis with skiing is dangerous cannabis impairs the coordination, reaction time, and judgment you need on the slopes.

This guide walks you through planning a Vermont ski trip that includes a responsible dispensary visit from choosing the right accommodation to timing your shopping to understanding Vermont’s cannabis laws.

Step 1: Understand Vermont Cannabis Laws Before Your Ski Trip

Before booking your Vermont ski trip, understand the legal framework for cannabis access and use.

Can Out-of-State Visitors Buy Cannabis in Vermont?

Yes. Vermont allows anyone 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID to purchase cannabis at licensed retailers, regardless of where they live. You don’t need Vermont residency, a Vermont driver’s license, a medical cannabis card, or any special registration.

Our complete guide on whether tourists can buy cannabis in Vermont covers all details.

Vermont’s Possession Limits

Vermont law limits how much cannabis you can possess at any time. These limits were updated under Act 176 (S.278), effective July 1, 2026:

⚡ Updated Vermont Act 176 (S.278), effective July 1, 2026: Possession limits increased

Effective July 1, 2026, Vermont’s cannabis possession and purchase limits increased under Act 176 (S.278). The table below reflects the updated limits useful for planning a multi-day ski trip. Verify current equivalent product limits at ccb.vermont.gov.

Product Type Legal Possession Limit (updated July 1, 2026)
Flower Up to 2 ounces (56 grams) increased from 1 oz under Act 176
Concentrates / Hashish Up to 10 grams increased from 5 grams under Act 176
Edibles Varies by THC content verify at ccb.vermont.gov

These limits apply to everyone, including tourists on multi-day ski trips. For complete Vermont regulations, visit the Vermont Cannabis Control Board website or read our comprehensive guide to Vermont cannabis rules.

Purchase Limit per Transaction

⚡ Updated Vermont Act 176 (S.278), effective July 1, 2026: Purchase limit per transaction increased to 2 ounces

As of July 1, 2026, adults 21 and older can purchase up to 2 ounces of cannabis flower per transaction doubled from the previous 1-ounce limit. This means ski tourists can stock up for an entire week’s stay in a single stop.

Where You CANNOT Use Cannabis on Your Ski Trip

Vermont prohibits public cannabis consumption everywhere:

  • At ski resorts: Not on any slopes or trails, not in lodge buildings or restaurants, not in parking lots or gondolas, nowhere on resort property
  • At most accommodations: Not in hotel rooms (most prohibit it), not in ski lodge common areas, not in bed and breakfasts, not in condo shared spaces
  • Anywhere public: Not in vehicles (even if parked), not at restaurants or bars, not in state parks or forests, not visible to the public

You can only use cannabis in private residences where it’s permitted, or on private property with owner’s permission. Note: Act 176 provides rental protections Vermont landlords cannot prohibit cannabis inside a residential dwelling unit but this does not apply to hotels, ski lodges, or commercial properties.

You Cannot Take Cannabis Home

  • Interstate transport is a federal crime
  • Flying with cannabis is prohibited by TSA
  • Mailing cannabis is illegal

Cannabis purchased during your Vermont ski trip must be used in Vermont before you leave.

Step 2: Choose Cannabis-Appropriate Accommodation

Your accommodation choice is the most critical factor in planning a Vermont ski trip with a dispensary visit.

Most Ski Lodges Prohibit Cannabis

Reality check: The majority of Vermont ski-area accommodations prohibit all cannabis use on their property. This includes major hotel chains near ski resorts, traditional ski lodges and inns, bed and breakfasts, and many condo complexes. Property owners can set their own rules even in states where cannabis is legal.

Before Booking: Research Cannabis Policies

  • Read policies carefully: Look for cannabis or smoking policies on websites; check terms and conditions; read recent guest reviews
  • Call directly: Ask specific questions about cannabis; inquire about edibles vs. smoking; request written confirmation
  • Ask these questions: ‘Does your property allow cannabis use?’ ‘Are edibles permitted if smoking is not?’ ‘What are consequences for violations?’
  • Get it in writing: Email confirmation protects you; screenshot online policies; save correspondence

Options If Cannabis Isn’t Allowed

  • Option 1 Skip cannabis during this trip: Focus entirely on skiing; plan a separate Vermont cannabis trip later; enjoy the mountains without complications
  • Option 2 Use CBD products only: Ask if non-intoxicating CBD is permitted; use CBD topicals for muscle recovery; no impairment, legal everywhere
  • Option 3 Find cannabis-friendly lodging: Rare near ski areas but some exist; private vacation rentals may allow it; expect to pay premium prices
  • Option 4 Day trips: Stay elsewhere in Vermont; drive to ski resorts for day trips only; use cannabis at accommodation that permits it

Most visitors planning a Vermont ski trip choose Option 1 they focus on skiing and save cannabis exploration for a different vacation.

Step 3: Plan When to Visit a Cannabis Dispensary

Timing is everything when planning a Vermont ski trip with a dispensary visit.

Best Times to Visit Juana’s Garden

  • Before your ski trip starts: Shop before reaching ski resort; get questions answered in advance; stock up for your entire stay in one trip now up to 2 oz per transaction
  • On a designated rest day: Take a break from skiing; explore Montpelier during the day; no rush or time pressure
  • After skiing for the day: Visit on your way back from mountains; shop in early evening; use same evening if permitted
  • Never: Morning before skiing; between ski runs during the day; right after using cannabis

Step 4: Understand the Critical Safety Rule

This is non-negotiable when planning a Vermont ski trip with cannabis: never use cannabis before or during skiing.

Why Cannabis and Skiing Don’t Mix

Skiing requires abilities cannabis impairs: quick reflexes and reaction time, balance and coordination, spatial awareness, clear judgment about terrain, risk assessment, and focus and concentration.

The Serious Risks

  • Collision with other skiers
  • Loss of control and falls
  • Getting lost or disoriented
  • Poor judgment in hazardous conditions
  • Increased injury severity
  • Legal consequences at resorts

The Only Safe Approach

  • Ski completely sober during the day
  • Finish skiing before any cannabis use
  • Return to accommodation
  • Use only if accommodation permits
  • Never drive after using
  • Wait until next day before skiing again

For detailed guidance, read our Vermont cannabis rules guide.

Step 5: Choose Appropriate Products

When planning a Vermont ski trip, product selection matters.
